Virgil van Dijk has been confirmed as the new captain of Liverpool FC, with Trent Alexander-Arnold appointed as vice-captain.
The central defender, who holds the same position for both his club and his country, the Netherlands, will assume the captaincy on a full-time basis, following the departure of Jordan Henderson from the Reds. Furthermore, the club has announced that Alexander-Arnold will serve as the vice-captain, taking over this role from James Milner.
Virgil van Dijk told: “It’s a really proud day for me, for my wife, for my kids, my family. It’s been a special feeling and I can’t really describe it at this point. But it’s something that I’m really, really proud of.”
“Obviously I’m captain of Holland, that was already such a huge honour, a proud moment as well. But also to be the captain of Liverpool Football Club is something that I can’t describe at this point.”
“It’s just something that makes me very proud and I will do everything in my power and what I can do to make everyone proud and happy with me and the football club.”
Since his transfer from Southampton to Anfield in January 2018, Van Dijk has made 222 appearances for Liverpool.
During this period, Alexander-Arnold firmly secured his position as a key member of Jurgen Klopp’s starting lineup, excelling in the role of right-back.
The pair have since been key figures in the Reds’ domestic, European and global success, contributing significantly to Liverpool’s triumphs in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and the FA Community Shield. And will now set out to be standard bearers together in the pursuit of more trophies.
End of the story
Two more players will say goodbye to Liverpool this summer. Henderson and Fabinho have won the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, Premier League, Carabao Cup (League Cup), Emirates FA Cup and Community Shield under Jurgen Klopp.
Henderson moved to Anfield from Sunderland in the summer of 2011 as then-manager Sir Kenny Dalglish added him to the ranks. Nevertheless, the determination and resilience Henderson demonstrated throughout his career with the club helped him cement a position as a key member. Captain Anfield chapter now comes to a close with a move to Saudi Arabia, following his 12 years as a Red.
