Liverpool have been drawn against Ajax, Napoli and Rangers in the group stage of the 2022-23 Champions League.
Jurgen Klopp’s side discovered their opponents during 25 August evening’s draw in Istanbul and the Reds placed in Group A, alongside Dutch, Italian and Scottish opposition. The Reds are no strangers to plotting their way to the final having done so three times under Klopp’s tutelage. I wonder if they can make it four this season?

Ajax were Liverpool’s group stage opponents back in 2020-21 season. But the two games were played behind closed doors due to the covid pandemic. Klopp’s side won both games by a single goal. Since then Ajax have undergone a change in the coaching position, Erik ten Hag moving to Manchester United. The new coach of the Amsterdam team – Alfred Schreuder
Napoli, meanwhile, are no strangers for the Reds having met in the group stages in both 2018-19 and 2019-20 campaign. Matches with them have not been too pleasant for Liverpool, with two defeats and a draw from those four games. Three years is a bit of a long time in football though. This summer first-team players are exit Napoli: defender Kalidou Koulibaly and iconic forwards Dries Mertens and Lorenzo Insigne.
And for the first time, Liverpool will make the trip to Rangers for a competitive fixture. There are several links between the clubs, one of which was coach Steven Gerrard. The boss is gone, replaced by Giovanni van Bronckhorst, but his team is still showing great football. Matches with Rangers will excite supporters and ensure there is not much travelling for the team.
European campaign fixtures
Liverpool European campaign is scheduled to start on September 6/7, with the rest of the matches taking place on September 13/14, October 4/5, October 11/12, October 25/26 and November 1/2.
