Liverpool FC have completed the signing of 22-year-old Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig for £60m.
The Hungarian midfielder has joined Liverpool as their second signing of the summer transfer window. He has agreed to the terms and passed the medical examination, similar to Alexis Mac Allister. Szoboszlai comes to Anfield after spending two and a half years in the Bundesliga with Leipzig, where he played 91 matches across various competitions.
Dominik Szoboszlai also follows in the footsteps of Liverpool’s iconic former captain Steven Gerrard in wearing the No.8 for the Reds after joining on a five-year deal until 2028.
Szoboszlai emerged from the youth development system of Red Bull Salzburg, an Austrian club. Before the end of the 2017/18 season, Szoboszlai returned to his parent club Salzburg from loan to FC Liefering, and made his debut as a substitute against Austria Vienna in May. He went on to make 83 appearances for Salzburg, scoring 26 goals. During the 2019/20 Champions League group stage, he faced Liverpool twice, both at home and away. His remarkable performances earned him the title of Austrian Bundesliga Player of the Season for 2019/20. In January 2021, Szoboszlai transferred to Leipzig, but an injury delayed his debut until the start of the 2021/22 season. During his time at Leipzig, he played 91 matches, scoring 20 goals, and providing 22 assists across all competitions.
On the international stage, Szoboszlai has represented Hungary with 32 caps and seven goals. He made his debut in March 2019 against Slovakia and was elected as the captain of the national team in November 2022, a decision made by his teammates and coach Marco Rossi.
New No.8 say: “It’s really, really good. I enjoyed the last [few] days and I’m looking forward to knowing everybody better.”
“The last three or four days went really long; it was not that easy. But at the end I’m here, I’m happy and I can’t wait to get started.”
“A really historic club, really good players, good coach, everything is good. For me it was perfect to make the next step in a club like this. The fans, the stadium, everything is really good.”
